Book 2 Chapter 7

"They can't get inside of you. If you can feel that staying human is worth while, even when it can't have any result whatever, you've beaten them."

He thought of the tele screen with its never-sleeping ear. They could spy upon you night and day, but if you kept your head you could still outwit them.

Winston feels that if he continues to rebel against the Party, they won't be able to succeed in their goals to maintain a dystopian society. He feels that maintaining his rebellious spirit will help him save humanity and stop those in power from keeping the people under.


Book 2 Chapter 8 (pg. 16)
" We believe that there is some kind of conspiracy, some kind of secret organization working against the Party, and that you are involved in it. We want to join it and work for it. We are enemies of the Party. We disbelieve in the principles of Ingsoc. We are thougt-criminals. We are also adulterers. I tell you this because we want to put ourselves at your mercy. If you want us to incriminate ourselves in any other way, we are ready." 

At this point of the story, Winston and Julia want to form an alliance with O'Brien. They lay everything on the table and tell O'Brien what their true intentions are. I find this quite interesting, because they completely disregard the fact that he could be one of them. I was surprised that Winston trusted him so willingly, considering the circumstances they were in. At the end of the day, they needed as many people on their side as possible. The more there is, the better.


Book 2 Chapter 10 (pg. 21)

"You are dead," repeated the iron voice.
"It was behind the picture,"breathed Julia.
"It was behind the picture,"said the voice. "Remain exactly where you are. Make no movement until you are ordered."

"It was starting, it was starting at last! They could do nothing except stand gazing into one another's eyes... unthinkable to disobey the iron voice from the wall. There was a snap as though a catch had been turned back, and a crash of breaking glass. The picture had fallen to the floor uncovering the telescreen behind it."

Julia and Winston were shocked when they realized that their whole relationship had been surveyed through by a telescreen hidden behind a picture of St. Clement's Church in the room they rented out. In a broader sense, it just comes to show that our lives are constantly being surveyed and monitored. It's just sad that their affair had to come to an end so soon.
